How to eat healthily to ease your period

eating healthy period painjpgThat dreaded time of the month. We’re all there regularly, usually found stuffing our faces with cakes, chocolate, chips.. anything we can lay our hands on that is not good for you.

However, something that we don’t think about is that.. Menstruation is in fact a cleanse. We are eliminating toxins from our body. When it is your time of the month our entire bodies go into cleansing mode.

We crave sugar when our bodies attempt to ‘open’ and relax enough to shed the lining of the uterus and the progesterone hormone increases, which causes an increase in the blood sugar. During this time, the stress hormone cortisol goes up and the feel good hormone serotonin goes down. The fluctuation of different hormones makes us crave sugar as it tries to balance out, so naturally we reach for the doughnuts.

But due to the fact we are in cleansing mode, we should take full advantage of this and use it to become even healthier.

Feeling tired and lethargic is always a symptom because cleansing takes energy.

The main thing i suggest is eating a lot of Alkaline meals.. Lot’s of green vegetables.. like Spinach, Kale, Broccoli etc and lots of green juices, smoothies and soups. Lemon’s, Beetroot, Garlic, Ginger, Turmeric, Avocados are all alkalising too.

Our bodies function better when the pH level is slightly more alkaline than acidic. If it is more acidic it affects our bodies natural hormone balance and obviously you don’t want that at this time. Alkalising your body will rebalance the hormones .. plus increase your energy levels.

Sipping on a smoothie for 20 minutes will also help with maintaining blood sugar levels and will reduce cravings. Adding superfood like Maca powder and Cacao powder to your smoothie is an amazing addition too.. They are full of minerals and vitamins (particularly the B vitamins that help with hormones) and Cacao is raw chocolate so it’s a healthy way to get a chocolate fix.

Wholefoods that are good carbohydrates, such as quinoa, bulgar and brown rice. These are good carbohydrates and will give you the right energy that lasts.

Our bodies are losing iron during the cleanse, so it is natural to crave iron. That’s why you probably fancy a steak or ham-burger. Lentils, Beans, Chickpeas, Soy beans, Spinach, Kale, Tomatoes, Goji berries, Avocado, Parsley, Chia seeds and Pumpkin seeds are all great plant based sources of iron.

There are so many tasty options that you can introduce to your diet, to work with your period instead of against it. How about a Kale and avocado salad drizzled with lemon and topped with blueberries or Quinoa with roasted broccoli and beetroot with wilted spinach.

Think of it as a detox and a chance to heal your body. We all deserve to live a healthy lifestyle and instead of dreading the time of the month, we should embrace it and use it to our advantage to cleanse regularly.
